When designers create a new model of a tractor or modernize an existing one, solving the problems of realizing engine power through the chassis and ensuring the required controllability of the tractor is at the forefront. New equipment arrives at farms, but it is still often necessary to install counterweights on the equipment. Why is the balancing issue still solved by installing a counterweight on the tractor?

The arrangement of components and assemblies on the tractor frame provides for a close to optimal location of the center of gravity. At the same time, for example, in tractors of the classic layout (front wheels are smaller than the rear ones) of the MTZ-80 type, about 1/3 of the tractor weight is redistributed to the front axle wheels, and about 2/3 to the rear wheels. If the leading axle is also the front axle (wheel arrangement 4K4 of MTZ-82 type), then more weight is redistributed to the front axle in order to realize the engine torque by the front driving wheels into the tractive effort of the tractor.

However, the tractor performs technological operations in a unit with different agricultural machines, which differ in different tractive effort, weight and distance of their center of gravity from the axis of the rear wheels of the tractor. As a result, the center of gravity of the tractor or the unit as a whole (if the machine is mounted) moves closer to the axle of the rear wheels, that is, the front wheels are unloaded. The tractor loses controllability (especially when driving uphill, sharp turns and when accelerating) and the thrust of the front drive axle decreases (if any).

Of course, the designers cannot foresee all cases, therefore, it is recommended to additionally ballast the tractor by installing additional weights (counterweights).

In this case, the weight of cast or stamped counterweights should be selected in accordance with the conditions of aggregation, and, accordingly, the counterweights should be type-setting, i.e., consist of separate elements that can be easily installed by one person.
